Read Luke 14:16-24.
Here’s part of it:
“A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, and sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’” (Luke 14:16-18)
If you read this whole parable, you can only come to one conclusion. God doesn’t deserve excuses.
There is an old song by the Gospel group The Kingsmen called “Excuses.” The chorus says this:
Excuses, excuses, You’ll hear them every day,
Now the devil he’ll supply them, If from church you stay away.
When people come to know the Lord, The devil always loses.
So, to keep them folks away from church, He offers them excuses.
This song is talking about going to church, but when it comes to the doing the will of God there should be no excuse great enough to stop you. That wasn’t the case for the guests in this parable. They had all received and accepted the invitation to come and feast at the supper but when the time came, they didn’t show up and instead they gave excuses.
The first guest said, “I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it.” (v. 18) Using his physical gains as an excuse. The second guest said, “I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.” (v. 19) He used work as an excuse. The third said, “I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.” (v. 20). Using family as an excuse.
The supper they were all invited to was a symbol for an invitation to do the will of God. But no one who said they would come followed through.
As followers of Christ, it is inexcusable to operate with excuses. Especially when it pertains to God’s will. It’s okay to want new things, to work hard, and to care for your family. Jesus wants you to have life abundantly (John 10:10). Just not at the expense of His will.
So, before you start to fill your day up with different tasks, appointments, and the things that you think are more important; put God first. Be sure that you don’t get so preoccupied with your stuff that you forget that everything I His. Including you.
There is no excuse for being too busy for God.
Have a great 4th of July weekend church!
I love you! See you Sunday! No excuses!
