“See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (Ephesians 5:15-17)
“Billy Graham was asked once what he was most surprised by in life. He answered, ‘Its brevity.’” (Christianity Today, Oct., 2006). Rev. Graham lived on this earth for 99 years preaching God’s word, but even he knew that life is short.
Since life is so short it is up to us make the most of our time here on earth. How are we to spend that time? In this passage Paul encourages the Christians at Ephesus to make the best use of their time rather than foolishly waste it. We also should make the best use of our time and not waste any opportunity to share God’s Good News with others. Why? Because Jesus commanded it in Matthew 28:19 and as we just read above “the days are evil.” Time can slip up on us and pass us by. We may have good intentions to do something good, and then suddenly opportunity has passed us by.
I remember as a child my grandfather used to have these wooden nickels, that he would give to people. He thought they were funny. On one side they had picture of a man and said “worth nothing.” On the other side it had in bold black letters “TUIT.” I asked once what did it say and he told me “That’s a round TUIT. Now you can finally get around to doing what you said you were gonna do. Cause you finally got ‘a round to it.’” Well, I was young, so it took a little explaining but I finally got the joke. I wish I had some of those old wooden nickels to give out today.
Thinking about those wooden coins now, how often do we say we will share the Gospel of Christ with our friends when we get around to it, but we never do? The clock keeps ticking and time keeps slipping away and we have a lot of work to do for the Kingdom.
Remember to get around to it soon, because if you don’t, it’s “worth nothing.”
I love you church! See you Sunday!!
